What to Expect at the Chicago Botanic Garden Light Show
Lightscape is the Chicago Botanic Garden’s take on Christmas lights, turning the Garden into a walk-through light show after dark, with music, color, and large-scale installations along a route around the Garden’s main island. The trail is reimagined each year, and for 2026, more than 80% of the light installations are new.
New highlights this season include a larger-than-life snow globe you can step inside and a ballerina of light that twirls and leaps across the night sky. Food and drink stops along the trail serve hot and cold beverages, snacks, and food for adults and kids.
Lightscape Tickets & Prices
Lightscape tickets are on sale now and sold online by date and entry time, one ticket per person. A Lightscape ticket covers the trail only, so there’s no separate Garden admission to buy. Get tickets through the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Lightscape page.
How Plan-Ahead Pricing Works
Lightscape uses plan-ahead pricing, so ticket prices vary by date, time, and expected demand. Saturdays and dates around the holidays typically cost more, while quieter weeknights cost less, and many dates are currently available for under $30. A $3 service fee applies to each paid nonmember ticket. Buying early gives you the best choice of dates and the lowest price for the night you pick. On Museums for All dates (Nov. 19, Dec. 3, 9, 10, and 16, and Jan. 1, 2, and 3), guests receiving SNAP benefits can buy tickets at a reduced price.
Ticket Exchanges & Weather
Lightscape runs rain or shine. If plans change, exchanges are allowed up to 72 hours before your original ticket date, for a $10 fee per transaction. If the weather becomes hazardous, the Garden makes a cancellation decision by 2 p.m. that day and contacts ticket holders about rebooking.
Lightscape Hours, Dates & Special Nights
Lightscape is open from 4:30 to 10:30 p.m. on most evenings, with last entry at 8:45 p.m. On select dates, it closes earlier, at 9:30 p.m., with last entry at 7:45 p.m. Tickets are sold in 15-minute entry windows, so plan to arrive close to your entry time, but no more than 15 minutes early. On Lightscape days, the Garden closes to daytime visitors at 3 p.m. and reopens at 4 p.m. for ticket holders only.
Most visitors spend 45 to 75 minutes on the trail. That leaves plenty of time earlier in the day for a Skydeck visit downtown before heading north for the evening.
Special Nights at Lightscape
- Sensory night, Dec. 2: Reduced crowds, with lowered lights and music for a more comfortable experience.
- Family nights, Dec. 9 and 16: Jingle Jam nights with Santa and other festive characters.
- 21+ nights, Dec. 10 and Jan. 1: An adults-only evening with drinks and festive bites, and no strollers.
Planning a holiday date night? Pair a 21+ night with dinner above the city at Pie in the Sky, served on the 99th or 103rd floor at Skydeck by reservation. For more ideas, see our guide to winter date ideas in Chicago. Visiting with kids? Holidays @ Skydeck offers its own Santa photo ops downtown. And for guests who appreciate a calmer setting, Skydeck is certified sensory inclusive by KultureCity.
Is Lightscape Open on Thanksgiving and Christmas?
In past seasons, Lightscape has been closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day. The Garden hasn’t listed 2026 holiday closures on its FAQ page, so check the Lightscape ticket calendar for open dates. If you’re planning around a holiday, Skydeck is open 365 days a year, including Thanksgiving and Christmas. For more holiday-week ideas, see our guide to things to do in Chicago for Thanksgiving.
Pair Lightscape With Holidays @ Skydeck
Lightscape shows off the holidays in a garden setting. Holidays @ Skydeck shows them off from the top of Willis Tower. Running Nov. 13, 2026, through Jan. 4, 2027, Holidays @ Skydeck transforms Skydeck’s lower-level Chicago Museum and observation deck with thousands of twinkling lights, holiday décor, and festive photo ops, all 103 floors above the city.
Together, they make an easy holiday lights weekend: one night on the garden trail in Glencoe, and one visit downtown to see Chicago’s skyline lit up for the season. During Holidays @ Skydeck, you’ll find:
- Holiday photo ops with Santa and themed backdrops, plus informal “Selfies with Santa”
- Seasonal live performances that add to the holiday spirit
- Festive décor from the Chicago Museum all the way up to the 103rd floor
Every Skydeck visit also includes The Ledge, glass balconies that extend 4.3 feet from the 103rd floor of Willis Tower, and the interactive Chicago Museum. And because Skydeck is indoors and open every day of the year, it’s a reliable holiday plan on nights when the weather isn’t cooperating, which makes it one of the easiest indoor things to do in Chicago all winter.
Getting to Lightscape: Parking & Transit
The Chicago Botanic Garden is at 1000 Lake Cook Road in Glencoe, about 20 miles north of downtown Chicago. Nonmembers need to buy parking for Lightscape. Advance parking is $18 per vehicle, compared to $25 if you pay on arrival, and advance buyers can use the member lane. Garden members park free, and the parking fee doesn’t apply if you arrive by ride-share.
Getting to Lightscape Without a Car
The Garden sits near the Braeside station on Metra’s Union Pacific North Line, which runs from Ogilvie Transportation Center in the West Loop, a short walk from Willis Tower. From Braeside, the Garden is about a 0.8-mile walk. Keep in mind you’ll be walking after dark on Lightscape nights, and check Metra’s evening schedule before you go.
Tips for Visiting Lightscape
- Dress for the weather. Lightscape is entirely outdoors, so wear warm layers and comfortable footwear. Umbrellas are allowed on most of the trail.
- Pick your night strategically. Saturdays and dates around the holidays are typically in highest demand, so look at weeknights and dates away from the holidays for lower prices and lighter crowds.
- Strollers are welcome every night except 21+ nights.
- Accessibility: The route uses paved and crushed gravel paths, and the Garden loans manual wheelchairs free of charge on a first-come, first-served basis. Free sensory backpacks with noise-cancelling headphones, sunglasses, and fidget toys are also available.
- Photos are encouraged, but tripods, monopods, and drones are not allowed.
- Restrooms are available along the trail.
- Make it a holiday lights weekend. See the garden lights one night, then catch the city’s holiday lights from 103 floors up at Skydeck. The Magnificent Mile Lights Festival takes over Michigan Avenue on Nov. 21, the weekend after Lightscape opens.
